The two major strengths of the series are it’s extraordinary detail (Victorian London is a character in itself) and the avoidance of having the characters become cardboard cutouts. Although basically a satisfactory guy, William isn’t a saint, and his refusal to gash things off with Eleanor in his attempts to appease his father is borderline cruel. Hakim could have been a first-class jerk but becomes distinguished more as the series progresses, giving William verbal smackdowns as the audience’s surrogate, and repeating as critical. Things always liven up when he’s around. Eleanor, who could have been written as a money-grubbing she-devil, is extremely sympathetic and has genuinely fallen in cherish with William, trying desperately to figure out what she’s doing injurious when she’s not at fault and William won’t be just with her. It’s even possible to be slightly sympathetic towards William’s father, who knows that a relationship between William and Emma would likely completely undo all his hard work to score the family where it is.

The 1956 film is aptly named; everything about it is immense. Three years in the making, and a rotund 202 minutes long, it’s the sweeping record of a Texas family that starts in the 1920s. Elizabeth Taylor is the young bride from East who, after a whirlwind romance with Rock Hudson, comes to his vast 595-acre Texas ranch. Here, she finds his unwelcoming sister, prejudice against the Mexican servants, and a condescending attitude to her as a woman. James Dean is here too, a spiteful ranch hand who yearns for her as well as wealth. She’s feisty though, as well as dazzling, and the rational center of the film, which spans a quarter of a century, as she and Rock Hudson quarrel, do up and raise their three children. Texas changes too. James Dean, the ranch hand, is the first to survey oil, and all of their lives change dramatically then. I was impressed with the quality of all of the actors, including Mercedes McCambridge, who has a cramped role as the sister. Sometimes I forget how talented Elizabeth Taylor is as an actress and even Rock Hudson, who is known for his rather stilted performances, was able to present some sincere feelings. James Dean, however, stood out above all the rest. The scenes he had with Elizabeth Taylor in which he showed his awkward vulnerability were ripe with nuance. It demanded mastery of his craft. His performance was indeed outstanding.

However, it is almost half a century since the film was produced. I now know what Elizabeth Taylor really looks like as a dilapidated woman. I have to smile at her gray-haired persona in the film, in which she remained slim and comely. I can’t relieve thinking about Rock Hudson’s shapely masculine image as he dukes it out in a diner when his Mexican-American daughter-in-law is refused service. And I’m saddened to reflect of unpleasant James Dean, who died tragically in a car accident at the age of 23 shortly after the film was made. His movie image of aging alcoholic millionaire is the only hint we have of what he might have looked like if he lived. The film even brought out thoughts of our bear President Bush, himself a product of a Texas background and his contain mixed Mexican-American family.

The video consisted of two reels, and included about an hour’s worth of features in addition to the more than three hours of the film itself. I stayed up unhurried into the night to view it all, including a short documentary about the limited town in Texas in which share of the film was made, an interview with Dimitri Tiomkin who wrote the music for the film, an interview with the son of the director, George Stevens, and a long telecast of opening night both in Hollywood and Original York with Jayne Meadows interviewing different stars as they entered the theater. I never saw “Giant” when it first came out. Videos and DVDs were years away in the future and, in those days, if you didn’t come by a film in the theaters when it first was released, that was that. I’m so delighted that this film was so easily available all these years later because I totally enjoyed the experience of spending a evening watching it. I was able to sit succor, relax, and return to a time, dwelling and cinematic point of notion that doesn’t exist anymore. The world is changed now. And so have I. But I absolutely loved this film. The two stars that I rate this DVD is simply for the unpleasant transfer of this classic motion represent. This movie is a 10 star movie, but this particular DVD release is simply unpleasant. It seems as if they ancient third generation, or even fourth generation negatives to produce this transfer, with absolutely no regard for consistancy. Some scenes are tolerable, at best, and seem that the transfer might have approach from a decent third generation negative, and some scenes are totally base and seem as if they were done from a fourth generation negative that was found on the cutting room floor. There is absolutely no consistancy of the colors and brightness from one scene to another. But this is only the half of it. The transfer to this disc was done in a arrive burly shroud recount which cuts so grand of the scenery off of the sides of every frame. It was a shame how this disc was done. This ravishing Hollywood narrative deserves such better treatment. The roles played by Rock Hudson, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor are classic Hollywood roles, and the new shooting of this legend was done in a pretty contrivance, (which you can be pleased on laserdisc if you fetch a copy.) This movie tells the fable of racial injustice and trys to narrate a morality lesson of racial tolerence, all situation in the by-gone days of depression era rural Texas. The sage of us-and-them as played out by Mexicans and Anglos, and as seen through the eyes of Hollywood, dosen’t score any better than this motion report. For that reason alone, if you really must bear this movie, remove this DVD. Otherwise you would be better off waiting for a better transfer or buying a fine ragged copy on laserdisc or buying this movie on the 1985 VHS do out by Warner Brothers, (do not occupy any VHS tape of this movie other than the 1985 version, the rest were poor) . I care for this movie, and it hurts me to observe this abominable transfer.

In the 1989 TV flick Slice KNIGHT, rocker (1981’s Grammy-winning “Jessie’s Girl”) and soap-opera star (GENERAL HOSPITAL, 1981-1983) Rick Springfield portrays Cut Knight, a homicide detective on the night shift who has a reputation for being a loner and a maverick. But he’s a pleasant cop, and he’s hip. He drives a wintry vintage Caddy, looks agreeable in sad leather, and has a soft position in his heart for the homeless (he often checks up on them when he’s out on his “beat”) . Oh, yeah–and he’s also a guilt-ridden vampire in quest of a cure for his supernatural malady. Solving crimes, specifically homicides, is sort of his arrangement of paying penance for the murderous, blood-sucking sins of his past.

Though often neglected or overlooked, Prick KNIGHT is an shining, skillfully written, and well-acted TV film that was actually the novel pilot for the accepted cult TV series FOREVER KNIGHT (1992-1996) . One reason that this film is nearly forgotten might be the fact that the same legend was re-shot with the TV cast and subsequently aired as the series’ two-part opener. Genre fans might spy Michael Nader from his role as Nicolas Pike in TV’s short-lived 1990 series THE FLASH, but couch potatoes are more likely to stare him from his long-standing role as Farnsworth Dexter on TV’s nighttime soap DYNASTY. Here he plays Nick’s longtime nemesis, Lacroix. (Nader does a noble job in the role, though he is admittedly not as compelling–nor as accomplished an actor–as Nigel Bennett, who assumes the role in the series.) As the film’s funny relief, John Kapelos is hilariously gripping in the role of Nick’s annoyingly self-absorbed partner Don Schanke, and he often steals the scenes he is in. Interestingly, Kapelos is the only actor in the film who returns to reprise his role for the TV series.

The film itself has really stood up well over time. Aside from the 1980’s pop tunes in the soundtrack and a few cheesy special FX, there isn’t distinguished that reveals Cut KNIGHT to be a product of late-1980s TV. The script is tight and racy, the characters are likable and realistic, the directing is advantageous, and, as mentioned before, the acting is suited. All in all, the film is a forgotten gem that, like its vampire characters, deserves to rise from the wearisome and live forever.

And thanks to the folks at Anchor Bay, Slit KNIGHT has been resurrected on DVD. Accurate, he offering is a bare-bones disc–i.e., there are no extras or bonus features–but the digital transfer is drastically better than the previous VHS releases of the film, and the sound quality is beautiful helpful. And being a telefilm, it is presented in its recent aspect ratio of 1.33:1.

For fans of the TV exhibit FOREVER KNIGHT who did not survey this pilot film prior to the creation of the series, it might consume a small time to warm up to the alternate actors and the character variations. But if viewed an commence mind, any fan of the TV series should devour Prick KNIGHT, and any fan of the vampire genre will want to add the DVD of this capable film to their collections.

I remember watching this when it premiered on television. Network television was going through one of its periodic obsessions with police procedural shows and the introduction of a vampire to the night shift of a metropolitan police force had a determined amount of appeal.

The demonstrate that finally ran (Forever Knight) was quite a bit different and therein lies some of the appeal of watching this movie– the chance to compare and disagreement. I had fair recently bought the first season of Forever Knight so I had a prime opportunity here.

This version is slicker, with an 80’s rock background that has a clear retro appeal. It was obviously shot in a warmer climate. Rick Springfield has a lean and hungry observe that contibutes to his tortured vampire character as he runs the gamut of emotion from tormented to tormented. While probably a better actor, Geraint Wynn Davies who played the character in the series, has to fight against his sleek, blond appearance. Somehow it is easier to spy as if you have a brooding, soul-destroying secret if you are a brunette.

I also really enjoyed the difference between Nick’s starvling, blood junkie pose and Alyce Hunter, the Mayan scholar, constantly stuffing herself with junk food. I also enjoyed her sight since Wardrobe apparently dressed her from Banana Republic befriend in the expedient obsolete days before BR became a mall shop.

Anyway, the movie is not unpleasant at all if you are in the mood for some vampire mind candy with a bit of retro.

The plot may be typical, with four high school friends swearing to “score” by prom, yet the film rises above the muck with its superior cast, successful and sweet humor, and some actually rather retro valus about the meaning and importance of sex. Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Eddie Kaye Thomas make up the odd quartet of pals determined to woo, lie, and beg their way to manhood. The young women they pursu are wary girlfriend Vicky (Tara Reid), choir girl Heather (Mena Suvari), band geek Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and just about any other female who is willing and able. Natasha Lyonne as Jessica, playing a similar role as in Slums of Beverly Hills, is the general adviser to the crowd (when Vicky tells her “I want it to be the right time, the right place,” Jessica responds, “It’s not a space shuttle launch, it’s sex“). The comedic timing hits the mark–especially in the deliberately awkward scenes between Jim (Biggs) and his father (Eugene Levy). And, of course, lessons are learned in this genuinely funny film, which will probably please the adult crowd even more than it will the teenage one. –Jenny Brown

I am biased, I’ll inform you that up front. Kurosawa is my well-liked director. Even if he were not, I would serene like this film.

Takashi Shimura (the head samurai in “Seven Samurai”) plays an alcoholic doctor in a dumpy urban fragment of post-war Tokyo. Toshiro Mifune plays a small-time gangster who initially visits the doctor regarding a bullet distress. The doctor discovers that the gangster also has tuberculosis, and stubbornly tries to treat it. I say stubbornly because the gangster tries to act macho about the disease. The two charactors are both so strongly portrayed that the doctor’s attempt to treat the disease and the gangster’s faked but desperate non-chalance makes their relationship a struggle; at times they actually arrive to blows over the doctor’s persistence. The doctor, I consider, sees something of himself in the gangster; someone on the edge of society, someone with flaws, someone with unfulfilled dreams. The doctor wants the gangster to survive, and the gangster desperately wants to survive, but his “toughness” keeps him from admitting that he wants to live.
